Messina overlooks the strait, known as the Strait of Messina, and is 5 km from the coast of Calabria. The city is spread longitudinally along the coast. The port of Messina has a unique shape, a spit of land curving upon itself that takes the form of a sickle, giving the city its nickname of "Zancle.
The climate is Mediterranean with hot summers and mild winters, allowing a multitude of rich green landscapes and diverse plant species that give the city a leading role regarding the importance of preserving the environment. The coastline of Messina is very beautiful, it offers some of the most amazing scenery in the world, and in the summer it becomes an important resort destination.
The city is bordered by the mountain Peloritani that is rich in flora and fauna. Messina has numerous historical monuments. One of the most popular tourist destinations is the cathedral and Piazza Duomo, which has a bell tower that is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the world. The local culinary specialties revolve around seafood cuisine, given the geographical position of the city. The most important fish in the diet is the Swordfish, which is caught seasonally in the strait. To not be missed are the typical sweets made with ricotta cheese: cannoli, cassate and the rice cakes.
